A 31-year-old man from Filabusi has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for rape and an additional 12 years for assault after being convicted in the Gwanda Regional Court.
The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 15-year jail term.
The court heard that on November 25, 2024, the accused approached a 12-year-old girl who was walking to school with her siblings.
Under the guise of asking for directions, he lured her into a nearby bush where he forcibly removed her clothes and raped her.

Following the assault, the accused struck the victim three times on the back of the head with an unidentified object, inflicting deep cuts and causing her to lose consciousness.
The girl was later found by a passerby who noticed her injuries and took her home. The incident was immediately reported to the police, and the victim was taken to a local hospital for medical examination.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, confirmed the conviction and sentencing.
