Five women from Chitungwiza District are one step closer to national culinary recognition after winning the local Amai Cook Out Programme competition held at the Aquatic Complex last Thursday.
The competition, a national initiative spearheaded by First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, aims to preserve and promote traditional Zimbabwean cuisine.
Twelve participants showcased their culinary skills, preparing traditional dishes judged on taste, presentation, and cultural authenticity.

The top five emerged victorious and will represent the district at the upcoming provincial cook-off. All participants received hampers from the Chitungwiza Municipality in recognition of their efforts.
Chitungwiza Municipality demonstrated its commitment to women’s empowerment by supporting the event.
In her speech, Councillor Priscilla Chitembwe, representing Her Worship Mayor Rosaria Mangoma, emphasized the vital role women play in the community.
“We are committed to supporting programmes like this,” Cllr. Chitembwe stated.
“The council is blessed to have female leaders, including the mayor.”Finance Director Dr. Evangelista Machona has praised the women’s dedication and encouraged them to strive for national victory.
“Continue striving for excellence until winning at the national level,” she urged.
A speech read on behalf of Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Charles Tawengwa, revealed the importance of gastronomy in understanding national history and culture.
“Through gastronomy, we can experience the authenticity of a place and its community,” the speech emphasized.
“It’s a universal language that brings people together, fostering connection, understanding, and appreciation.”
The Amai Cook Out Programme continues to gain momentum nationwide, celebrating Zimbabwe’s rich culinary heritage and empowering women in the process.
