Mnangagwa Stands by Chivayo Amidst Corruption Allegations

0

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has publicly defended businessman Wicknell Chivayo against allegations of corruption and claims that he is acting as a frontman for distributing cash and vehicles to Zanu-PF members and artists. Dismissing the accusations, Mnangagwa portrayed Chivayo as a philanthropist, challenging critics to investigate the source of his wealth rather than insinuate government involvement.

“Investigate where you think I’m getting the money to give Chivayo to distribute, rather than wasting my time worrying about someone who is using his own money,” Mnangagwa stated.

However, his defense has not quelled skepticism. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has been vocal in his criticism of Chivayo, referring to him as a “chigananda,” a term that suggests engagement in dubious dealings. Chiwenga emphasized that Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 should benefit all citizens rather than a select wealthy few.

“Vision 2030 is for all of us, not those you refer to as mbinga. During the liberation struggle, we referred to those as zvigananda,” Chiwenga remarked, further fueling debate over Chivayo’s legitimacy.

Adding to the scrutiny, Zanu-PF Central Committee member and war veteran Blessed Geza accused Chivayo of being involved in corrupt activities, hinting that Mnangagwa may be using him to divert attention from more pressing issues.

Despite mounting criticism, Chivayo remains unwavering in his support for Mnangagwa, frequently expressing his loyalty on social media, including endorsing the possibility of the president extending his term. His open displays of allegiance have only deepened speculation regarding the businessman’s political influence.

As controversy swirls around Chivayo and his ties to the presidency, concerns persist over the role of wealthy elites in shaping Zimbabwe’s political landscape. The debate underscores broader anxieties about corruption, governance, and the intersection of wealth and power in the country’s leadership.
