Zimbabwe’s First Female Heart Surgeon Breaking Barriers in Medicine

0

Dr. Kudzai Kanyepi has broken new ground by becoming Zimbabwe’s first female cardiothoracic surgeon, a milestone in a field historically dominated by men. Practicing at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, she now plays a key role in life-saving heart and lung surgeries, inspiring future generations of female doctors.

Dr. Kanyepi is one of only five cardiothoracic surgeons in Zimbabwe and among just 12 women in Africa to qualify in this highly specialized profession. She recently participated in a groundbreaking series of open-heart surgeries at Parirenyatwa, demonstrating her expertise and commitment to improving healthcare in the country.

Her path to medicine was unconventional. Initially aiming to study electrical engineering at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), she switched to medicine after being placed in the program due to limited space in engineering. Though reluctant at first, she later embraced the medical field, transferring to the University of Zimbabwe, where she discovered her passion for surgery.

I wasn’t planning to be a doctor, but once I was in, I realized surgery fascinated me,” she said, recalling how her interest grew as she progressed in her studies.

Determined to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery, she pursued further training in South Africa, where she encountered both challenges and inspiration. She met Dr. Lindiwe Sidali, South Africa’s first Black female cardiothoracic surgeon, who encouraged her to persist despite the odds.

“In a male-dominated field, some questioned whether I could handle it, but I focused on proving my skills through hard work,” Dr. Kanyepi explained.

Today, she not only performs complex heart surgeries but also mentors young medical professionals, particularly women, advocating for greater female representation in surgery.

“Surgery needs more women, and I want to help create an environment where they feel encouraged to enter this field,” she said.

Beyond her work in the operating room, Dr. Kanyepi is a vocal advocate for improved heart disease awareness and access to treatment in Zimbabwe. She continues to push for better healthcare policies while inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.

Her journey from an uncertain start to becoming a trailblazer in Zimbabwe’s medical landscape stands as a testament to resilience, skill, and the power of determination.
