Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, Lands Major Deal to Provide Journalists With Residential Stands

0

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has struck a landmark agreement with Best Option Properties (BOP) to provide affordable residential stands for journalists and media workers across the country. The announcement was made at a press conference in Harare, led by ZUJ Secretary-General Perfect Hlongwane.

The initiative aims to ensure that journalists, often underpaid and struggling with financial stability, can own homes. “Providing access to land is at the core of our mission as a union. We want to secure the future of our members by making homeownership a reality,” said Perfect Hlongwane.

ZUJ identified several land developers but ultimately settled on Best option properties due to its nationwide presence and flexible payment terms. The developer has land in Harare, Chinhoyi, Kwekwe, Gweru, Masvingo, and is in the process of securing additional land in Mutare. This widespread availability ensures that journalists across Zimbabwe can benefit from the scheme.

The residential stands range from 300m² to 2,000m² with an affordable deposit structure. Instead of an upfront $4,000 deposit, members can pay $700 in three months, after which they begin flexible subscription payments based on their stand size. Buyers have up to three years to complete payments.

To safeguard journalists’ investments, ZUJ has introduced a trust account to manage payments. “Funds will not be paid directly to the developer. Instead, they will go into a protected account, and disbursements will only be made through legal processes,” Perfect Hlongwane explained. If a journalist is unable to continue payments, BOP has committed to assisting with reselling the stand or refunding the investment.

The first housing project is set for Riddle Ridge, Harare with documentation available at ZUJ offices. Journalists interested in applying can review permits, government approvals, and agreements before committing.

This housing scheme marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwean journalists, addressing a longstanding challenge of financial insecurity and lack of property ownership. ZUJ’s collaboration with BOP reflects a broader effort to improve the welfare of media workers, ensuring they have not only a voice in society but also a place to call home
