Government Nears Completion of Mbare Market Hub to Restore Traders Livelihoods

The Zimbabwean Government is finalizing the construction of a modern market hub in Mbare, aiming to restore the livelihoods of traders who lost their businesses in a devastating fire last October. The project, spearheaded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is set to accommodate thousands of traders in a phased approach.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs highlighted the government’s commitment to rebuilding Mbare into a thriving economic center. The fire, which destroyed money, goods and livelihoods, led to a state of disaster declaration by the president. Following the incident, officials from the Ministry of Local Government and the City of Harare conducted and the City of Harare conducted an assessment and recommended immediate intervention.

In response, the government approved the construction of a state of the art market hub. Masimba Construction Company is responsible for the project, collaborated with traders to study successful market models in South Africa, while Minister Monica Mutsvangwa led a delegation to Russia for further insights.

Mutsvangwa assured traders that the allocation of market spaces would be done transparently and fairly. “The process of finalizing the first batch of beneficiaries is in progress and will be conducted in an orderly manner. We need solidarity, cooperation and honesty to ensure success”, she stated.

The ministry of Women’s Affairs, Small and Medium Enterprises Development encouraged affected traders to organize themselves and work closely with the government. Mutsvangwa also urged women to open bank accounts with the Women’s Bank to facilitate financial growth.

The first phase of the market will accommodate2, 500 traders, with a three story building planned to house additional vendors. The project has already created 300 jobs and more employment opportunities are expected as construction progresses. Future developments including a hotel, will prioritize job opportunities for Mbare residents.

Ernest Kazingizi, the chairman of the youth, appealed to the government for financial support to help young traders rebuild and grow their businesses. “We are asking the government to assist us with loans so that we can revive and expand our businesses”, he said.

Minister Garwe, who is leading the project, emphasized the government’s dedication to completing all phases swiftly. “People should not be discouraged if they do not get a market space in the first phase. The government is working hard to ensure all traders are accommodated”, he said.

As the market nears completion, traders remain hopeful that the new infrastructure will not only restore their businesses but also elevate Mbare’s economic significance. President Mnangagwa is expected to officiate the final groundbreaking ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of Zimbabwe’s informal trade sector.
