Urgent Call to Address Condom Shortage in Epworth

0

Epworth North Member of Parliament , Zivanai  Mhetu, raises alarm over critical condom shortages in health facilities, urging for immediate government intervention.

In a recent constituency update, Honorable Mhetu, the Member of Parliament for Epworth North, expressed his concerns regarding the alarming shortage of condoms in health centres following a freeze on foreign aid. During his visit to several clinics on January 5, 2025, he discovered that while there is sufficient medication for the 22,000 residents on Anti-Retroviral Therapy, the supply of condoms is critically low, with only a four-month stock remaining.

“We are facing a serious public health challenge,” Mhetu stated. “The abrupt halt of aid not only threatens our access to essential health supplies but also endangers the lives of our residents. I urge the United States government to reconsider its stance on foreign aid and continue supporting health initiatives in our community.”

The MP highlighted the impact of staffing shortages at local clinics, which have been further exacerbated by the withdrawal of essential personnel from organizations like Zimtech and PEPFAR. With fewer nurses and primary counsellors available, the remaining staff are overwhelmed, making it increasingly difficult to meet the healthcare needs of the community.

Mhetu emphasized the importance of addressing these gaps promptly, advocating for the government to recruit LOCUM staff to alleviate the burden on existing healthcare workers. He also called for donor agencies and well-wishers to step in to ensure that adequate supplies of medications and condoms are available.

“This situation is not just a logistical issue; it’s a matter of public health and safety,” he continued. “Our residents deserve access to comprehensive healthcare services, and we must act now to prevent further decline.”

In light of these challenges, the MP is committed to keeping the community informed and engaged as efforts are made to secure the necessary resources for Epworth North.
