Housing director and community service of the city of Harare, Admire Nhekariyo, revealed that the city has exhausted its residential land.
Speaking before the Harare city council commission of inquiry established by President Emerson Mnangagwa to investigate local governance and accountability , Nhekariyo acknowledged that only undesignated land is available, highlighting the dire need for alternative solutions
Moreover, Nhekariyo exposed that councillors are exploiting the regularization process of land allocation to further their political interests, rather than prioritizing the needs of the community.
“For the past five years i have been in my office councillors have allocated land in their constituency not allowed by the law”
This misuse of power undermines the city’s ability to provide affordable housing and perpetuates inequality.
The city’s housing crisis is a pressing concern, with the demand for residential land far exceeding the available supply.
The lack of transparency and accountability in land allocation processes exacerbates the issue, making it challenging for the city to address the housing needs of its residents.
However, Nhekariyo admitted that, as Housing and Community Service Director, he has no role in allocating stands for clusters and flats.
