New Start Centres Temporarily Closed: Impact of USAID Policies

0

A stark notice outside the New Start Centre reads: “Temporarily Closed.” Behind these words lies a crisis threatening the health of thousands of Zimbabweans. The closure of these vital health facilities follows a freeze on USAID funding and the administrative leave of nearly all its direct-hire personnel under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The consequences are severe, particularly for those relying on the centres for HIV treatment and prevention services.

For years, New Start Centres have played a critical role in Zimbabwe’s fight against HIV/AIDS, offering access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Now, patients in need of urgent medication and support are being redirected to public health facilities that are already overburdened, underfunded, and ill-equipped to handle the influx. This disruption in healthcare services raises fears of treatment interruptions, drug resistance, and an increase in HIV infections, threatening to undo years of progress in combating the epidemic.

The crisis stems from broader geopolitical decisions. Under Trump’s administration, a shift in U.S. aid policies led to funding freezes that have crippled health programs across sub-Saharan Africa.

For Zimbabwe, where over 1.3 million people live with HIV, the stakes are high. The impact of these policy changes extends beyond individuals strained healthcare systems, rising mortality rates, and potential setbacks in national health goals are all looming threats. The heavy reliance on donor funding has left the country vulnerable to external decisions, exposing the urgent need for self-sufficient healthcare policies.

The closure of the New Start Centres is a wakeup call. Zimbabwe’s leaders must act swiftly to develop sustainable health solutions, invest in local drug manufacturing, and strengthen public health infrastructure. Without immediate intervention, millions could face dire consequences. The future of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system hangs in the balance.
