Chitungwiza Municipality  Cracks Down On Illegal Mobile Cash Cabins

0

Chitungwiza Municipality has issued a stern warning to operators of  unlicensed mobile cash cabins and containers and unapproved precast walls, directing them to cease operations immediately if they do not have the required licenses, permits, or legitimate leases. The municipality has given these businesses until February 6, 2025, to vacate the area, failure to which will result in the confiscation of goods and equipment.

This move is part of the municipality’s efforts to bring order to the informal trading environment and generate revenue. However, some residents have criticized the council for its heavy-handed approach, arguing that it will further sour relations with the community.

The municipality’s acting town clerk, Japson Nemuseso, emphasized that the council will not hesitate to take action against non-compliant businesses. This directive is separate from another notice issued by the municipality, which targets homeowners and businesses with unapproved precast walls, giving them until February 28, 2025, to regularize their structures.

The Chitungwiza Municipality’s actions highlight the complex challenges of managing the urban informal economy. While the council aims to regulate the environment and generate revenue, it must also balance this with the need to support informal traders who are trying to make a living in challenging economic conditions.
