A devastating environmental disaster has struck Lake Chivero Recreational Park, where four rhinos, along with numerous other species, have perished due to cyanobacteria contamination in the park’s water sources. Despite intervention efforts, the crisis continues to ravage the park’s biodiversity.
The tragic toll includes four rhinos, three zebras, four wildebeests, fish eagles and goats and cattle from nearby farms.
Authorities managing the park have implemented temporary measures and they said,”The pollution challenges facing Lake Chivero demand a collective response. We must work together to promote better environmental practices and safeguard our biodiversity.”
However, these efforts have been insufficient to deter animals from drinking from the contaminated lake
Parks authorities urged the public and relevant stakeholders to join forces to combat pollution and protect biodiversity. They emphasize the need for a collaborative approach to address the crisis.
Cyanobacteria are organisms in the domain bacteria able to carry out oxygenic photosynthesis with water as an electron donor and to reduce carbon dioxide as a source of carbon, or those secondarily evolved from such organisms.
