Government through transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, has called for responsible action to reverse rising road canarge numbers.
Basking in the glory of the now opened mbudzi interchange, Minister Mhona urged drivers to take action and halt the escalating trend of road accidents that is claiming lives and damaging the economy.
Mhona emphasized the devastating economic impact of road traffic accidents on affected families and the nation as a whole. He stressed the need for collective effort to reverse the concerning statistics and prevent further tragedies on the roads.
In his address, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development issued a stern warning to bus operators, cautioning them against speeding. He emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits set by the law to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users.
“Clearly the time comes when we need to collectively agree to put a stop to this worrisome trend and start reversing those numbers.
“We cannot continue on this trajectory; something has to give,” he said.
Highlighting the grim reality of road accidents, Minister Mhona revealed that globally, road accidents have become the leading cause of death among individuals aged between 25 and 45.
“In Zimbabwe, a road traffic crash occurs every 15 minutes, this results in about five people being killed, while about 38 people are injured every single day on our roads. Just last year some 2 089 people lost their lives on our roads. We mustn’t look at these facts as mere figures, but as actual human beings, someone’s father, mother, brother, sister or child whose lives were cut short by the behaviour of another human being or their misjudgment,” he added.
Mhona called upon all road users to consider the human cost behind these statistics, emphasizing that every life lost in a road accident represents a tragic loss for a family and community.
He urged both drivers and passengers to prioritize road safety and make responsible choices to prevent future accidents and save lives.
