Forum for African Women Educationalist Zimbabwe (FAWEZI) urged journalist to practice sensitive reporting and balanced reporting especially on Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases by holding perpetrators accountable by avoiding name calling of women involved in any cases.
This was addressed during a training of media houses on GBV –Sensitive reporting which was aimed at enhancing understanding of GBV and its complexities and equipping them with tools t report violence with its sensitivity and accuracy.
“We urge you to harness the power of media in making the society safe by amplifying the voices of the marginalized and avoid labeling of survivors hence use of the right terminology which also enhances the understanding of the impacts of GBV.
The media should prioritize the best interests of survivors and focus on safety confidentiality, respect and non discrimination and empower survivors by putting them at the centre of the healing process”, FAWEZI Project Officer said.
Speaking during the same event Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe Executive Director Loughty Dube said media practitioners should always practice ethical reporting practices on GBV issues.
“ GBV survivors requires sensitive reporting and it is also a constitutional right to protect sources and you should consider the state of trauma the victim is in”.
