Following the cloud of heavy doubt and criticism hanging over Zimbabwe controversial August 2023 elections, after SADC Head of Observer Mission, former Zambian Vice President Never Mumba reported that Zim elections were a sham which fell short of SADC guidelines, the recent Summit shocked the world after endorsing its regional elections, commending the DRC, Eswatini, Madagascar, SA and Zimbabwe for successfully holding peaceful elections.
This was egg on the face of Zambia and many Zimbabweans who condemned the elections, with the first elections held in Southern Africa this year taking place in Comoros in January, which also was not discussed.The Comoros leader did not even turn up for the SADC summit.
Elections are now due in Botswana and Mozambique in October, Namibia in November and Mauritius, on dates yet to be announced, for the last part of the year 2024.
Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi, who attended his last summit as a head of state, waw bid farewell by delegates attending the summit.
The Mozambique’s President Nyusi’s second and last presidential term ends in two months and delegates expressed gratitude for his contributions to the SADC.
Namibia’s interim president Nangolo Mbumba’s waw also attending his first and only summit with his term ending in November.
