Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has confirmed the death of Vice-President Salous Chilima and nine others in a plane crash.
Yesterday the President of Malawi notified the public that the Malawian Defense Force Aircraft that had left Lilongwe on Monday 10 June 2024 at 09:07 Hours had failed to make its scheduled landing at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02.
During his national address, this afternoon he said, “10 were killed when the military plane crashed on a hill in the Chikangawa forest due to bad weather”.
“Malawi Defence Force is in the process of bringing the remains of the deceased to the Capital, Lilongwe and he will announce funeral arrangements in due course”, he added.
Presidential and Party Spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said, “Deep thoughts of sympathy go to Madam Mary Chilima and children, the families and loved ones of the nine others. May the nation find strength and comfort in the unity as we mourn our true sons and daughters”.
Among the passengers was the former First Lady and the ex-wife of former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi.
