The Government of Zimbabwe on Wednesday announced their proposed plans for bus and kombi drivers age limit to increase from 25 to 30 years of age for all public service drivers.
Over the years there has been an increase in the rising number of traffic accidents and fatalities due to reckless driving who are mostly younger than 30.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Felix Mhona in the announcement on social media said, “The Ministry was trying to see how it could synchronize the age limit of those who would then drive public transport”.
He added, “I’m sure the legal department in my Ministry is working with the Attorney General in that regard and we are saying for public vehicles, we are not sticking to 25 years and we are now advocating to increase”.
The move hopes to ensure that only mature drivers are behind the wheel of public service vehicles and to reduce the number of traffic accidents on the roads.
Speaking to this publication, a woman from Kuwadzana who preferred anonymity said, “The young drivers do not listen to the passengers when they were told to reduce speed, rather they are ignorant they put music on full blast so that they can’t hear you. Sometimes we choose not to board the kombis with these young people because they do not value life.”
