A 41-year-old man from Plumtree was convicted by the Magistrates Court at Plumtree on the 28th of February 2024 on two counts of rape.
The accused person is the uncle who raped her sometime back in 2018 when she was 11 years old. He raped her again on divers occasions until October 2023. The offense came to light on 30 January 2024 when the niece wrote a suicide note.
“The complaint wrote a suicide note citing the rape as the cause of her intended suicide. A neighbor discovered the note and took a letter to her mother. The accused person was arrested and denied bail until the case was finalized”, said the statement.
The accused person was found guilty on two counts of rape one for 2018 and the other one in 2013. He was sentenced to 16 years for the first count, and four years were suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit the same crime.
For the second count, he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. He will serve 27 years effectively.
