ZICORBA National Rabbit Farmers Training Programme Launched

The Deputy Minister for Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Zim, Honorable Davis Marapira, officially launched the Zimbabwe Commercial Rabbit Breeders Association (ZICORBA) national rabbit farmers’ training program in Harare.

During the launch, the Deputy Minister highlighted the potential of rabbit farming as a promising sector within the national agricultural landscape, offering numerous opportunities for economic empowerment, food security, and rural development.

“The establishment of ZICORBA in July 2020 and the launch of this national training program mark a significant milestone in our efforts to fully utilize the potential of rabbit farming and develop this value chain. Rabbit farming has the potential to play a vital role in the country’s agricultural sector and overall economy,” said Hon. Marapira

He also emphasized the advantages of rabbit farming, such as its minimal land and resource requirements compared to traditional livestock farming, the potential for developing processing and marketing facilities for meat, fur, and other by-products, expanding market opportunities, and the prolific breeding nature of rabbits, which allows for rapid multiplication of stock and increased productivity to address food security concerns and generate income for rural households.

In an interview with the media, Honorable Marapira expressed the government’s commitment to promoting the growth of the rabbit sector locally by considering introducing rabbits to the presidential program.

“If we can grow breeding stocks, we can also provide rabbits to farmers in the same way we provide chickens. The President’s policy is to boost the economy in rural areas,” he said

He also emphasized the immense benefits of partnering with China, urging rabbit farmers to seize this golden chance for expansion drawing on the deep-rooted bond between the two governments, he painted a picture of a prosperous future, where Zimbabwean rabbit farmers would flourish in collaboration with their Chinese counterparts.
