Two Zimbabweans were diagnosed with the deadly Cholera disease when they recently crossed the border back to their hunting grounds in South Africa.
South Africa’s Department of Health in Limpopo’s spokesperson Niel Shikwambana confirmed the development and reveal that the latest discovery has activated the department which has already partnered the Border Management Authorities (BMA) to step up efforts to contain the cholera outbreak in the province.
“Working with the Border Management Authorities and the National Department of Health, the WHO and other partners, we are making sure that that kind of work is done at our borders. Most importantly for us to ensure that in terms of surveillance on the ground, we are strong and facility response is up to scratch, hence I’ve already indicated that we’ve given an alert to all our facilities to say we can’t afford to be complacent when this outbreak is running amok in some of our neighbouring countries,” said Shikwambana.
Zimbabwe and Zambia are the two southern region countries that are battling cholera with more than 200 lives having been lost so far in Zimbabwe while 300 have since died in Zambia. Zambia has since encouraged its people from the cities to trace their footprints to rural areas to try and control the deadly viral disease.
