UN Coordinator Challenges Youths

The United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarians Coordinator, His Excellency Edward Kallon rallied the Zimbabwean youths to elevate their country into realms of higher development trajectory and also to work hard towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.
Kallon was speaking at a gathering to belatedly celebrate Volunteer Day at Jameson Hotel in Harare yesterday.

“The older generation has entrusted you with the mantle of responsibility and the call for a paradigm shift. I encourage you to embrace this responsibility wholeheartedly and actively pursue localizing the global goals, including advancing peace, and non-violence, and championing gender-based violence as part of our on-going 16 Days of Activism against women and girls,” said Kallon.
He added, “Your active participation in matters that affect your lives and those of future generations is vital for realizing a society that respects human rights, is democratic, and progressively moves towards achieving sustainable development. You are advocates of peace and development. Let us view peace not just as a destination but as a journey fuelled by action and purposeful living.”

Kallon also highlighted that, with full utilization of the talents and readiness of the youths to contribute to the best of their ability, Zimbabwe will be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

“By harnessing the intelligence, resources, and energy of the youth effectively, Zimbabwe can materialize its development strategy and vision to become an upper middle-income society and achieve the SDGs by 2030. I would like to underline that with the full utilization of the talents and readiness of the youth to contribute to the best of their ability, Zimbabwe will be able to achieve the SDGs and realize its vision by 2030”.

For youths to be the catalysts and drivers of peace and equitable and sustainable development, they should be provided with affordable high-level education and skills development opportunities.
This enables them to embrace modern technology and build capacity for self-sustaining growth.
Encouraging entrepreneurial aspirations among the youth unlocks their energy, intelligence, and resources, leading to the realization of the country’s development plans and vision.
By empowering the youth to plan, decide, and work, they become better equipped to face life’s challenges.
