The Zimbabwe Media Commission organized Post Election National Media Review Indaba held at Rainbow Hotels in Bulawayo with different media houses presenting their coverage of the 2023 harmonized elections.

ZMC applauded the media for covering general elections, which created a peaceful electoral atmosphere in the country. The Chairperson, Ruby Magosvongwe said, “Let me applaud the media sector played during the 2023 harmonized elections, yes there were some incidents that need attention, but the overall performance was commendable”.

In its strategic Plan Action, despite budgetary constraints, the ZMC came up with the report and Peace Building Manual to equip media practitioners with knowledge and skills for reporting for elections. The manual was produced with the support of UNDP and UNESCO. Over 2000 copies were distributed to media houses and journalists.

It also trained about 1000 media practitioners and distributed 2000 press jackets for foreign and local journalists. Prof Magosvongwe said, “No incidents of harassment between the law and journalists during the election period”.

Richard Ngurunga of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said, “The media gave the elections balanced coverage. The monitoring exercise revealed that there was a general improvement as far as balanced coverage of elections as compared to the same during the 2018 harmonized election”.

Vincent Kahiya the media trainer said, “He had noticed the improvement in the coverage of the elections by the media, but a shortage of resources affected the case. Media houses had working plans to cover the polls but these were not supported by resources”.
