Mourners Face Arrest At Accident Scene

Seventy mourners were arrested on Friday while conducting rituals at a hit-and-run accident scene in Mbare, Harare obstructing free movement of traffic and people.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reflected that a man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Wednesday, mourners then disembarked at the scene on Friday on their way to Granville Cemetery (Mbudzi)and started to dance and sing leading to their arrest.

Seventy mourners who occupied two trucks were arrested as they were causing disorder and movement of vehicles at an intersection.

The singing and dancing at the death spot is a belief that the avenging spirits are the restless spirits of individuals who have died under tragic or unjust circumstances as murder and accident, the relatives of the deceased perform some rituals at the accident or murder scene or at the grave scene to incite the spirit of the deceased to seek vengeance.
