For 38 years, Chegutu Pirates have toiled in the football wilderness.
The team would be either playing their trade in the unfashionable world of Division One League or at some point sink into Division Two, but what I like about the team, the community never allowed it to sink into oblivion.
Tomorrow, their dream of bringing Premiership football to the small agricultural town of Chegutu might come to fruition if they beat Black Mambas who they trail with two points in the Runyararo Northern Region Division One League.
It took some bravery and commitment from the Chegutu Pirates executive who was ushered into office last year on 2 December to make sure they put the house in order and push for promotion into the premier league.
As it stands, former premier soccer league side Black Mambas, who made their intentions of getting back into the elite league clear led the pact during the early stages of the league and have managed to stay at the summit for the better of the season and are still there. However, they are facing stiff competition from Chegutu Pirates who have been breathing neck to neck in second position.
Northern Region’s main attraction this weekend will feature the two teams at the top of the league in a make-or-break encounter for both teams.
A win for Chegutu Pirates will see them topple Warumwa Warumwa from the summit of the log table with one round of matches left before the curtain comes down. A win for the visitors will cement their promotion chances, as they will extend their lead to five points adrift of their closest rivals.
Mambas will end the league with an away match to Trojan while Pirates will be at home to the Young students.
