The US has condemned the continued attacks and abductions targeting oppositions in Zimbabwe following the abduction of CCC MP Takudzwa Ngadziore this week .
In a statement, the US through its embassy in Harare said that it was deeply concerned by reports of human rights violations and called on the relevant authorities to respect human rights
” The United States is deeply disturbed by continued reports of violence, assault & abductions of opposition members in #Zimbabwe. We urge respect for constitutional rights & the fundamental freedoms that underpin them,”read the statement.
Takudzwa Ngadziore, an Citizens Coalition for Change member of parliament in Zimbabwe, alleged he was being abducted and tortured by suspected state agents before being dumped in Mazowe.
The 24-year-old legislator sent an SOS through a Facebook live describing that he was being chased. A man wielding a military assault rifle is seen running towards him. The video, which circulated widely on social media, cuts off after seven minutes.
The harassment of opposition figures highlights the Zimbabwe government’s growing intolerance of voices deemed critical to the Mnangagwa administration and Ngadziore’s alleged abduction raises further concerns regarding the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe following the disputed August 23 elections.
His case is not an isolated one. On September 2, Womberaishe Nhende, the elected CCC councilor for Glen Norah Ward 27 in Harare, and activist Sonele Mukhuhlani, were allegedly abducted and tortured before being dumped on the outskirts of the capital. Both described abuses similar to those of Ngadziore.
