The government of Zimbabwe in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, launched a two-day training workshop for the Codex Trust Fund 2 (CTF2) project in Harare yesterday.
In a speech read by FAO Assistant Representative, Constance Pepukai, on behalf of FAO Sub Regional Coordinator for Southern Africa and representative for Zimbabwe, Dr Patrice Talla said, “the second phase of the project focuses on supporting physical participation in Codex meetings to help build a strong, solid and sustainable national capacity engagement,” she said.
She highlighted that FAO will work closely with the government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders to implement the Codex Trust Fund 2.
“It is quite imperative for Zimbabwe at this stage to partner with Codex Alimentarius Commission so that it harmonizes its food standards, guidelines and codes of practice to international benchmarks”, she said.
The use of international food standards promotes a smooth flow of access to food markets, with reduced international trade costs, making the trade more transparent and efficient.
The main objective of FAO in Africa is to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition through improved food safety.
