Self-styled preacher Uebert Angel is reportedly seeking approval to acquire disused assets and land belonging to Chitungwiza Municipality amid corruption allegations being levelled against Citizens Coalition for Change [CCC] councillors.

A company that is linked to Angel wrote a letter to Chitungwiza Municipality expressing eagerness to acquire land and disused property to convert them into a hotel, conference centre, shopping mall, service station, and construction of the medical centre.

The proposal has attracted the attention of the residents of the dormitory town, before the Chitungwiza Municipality which will decide on the proposed deal.

Chitungwiza and Manyame Residents Association Director Marvelous Khumalo said due diligence should be done to ensure that ratepayers are not short-changed.

“It is bad that the Municipality has continued making negative headlines, especially on the issues involving the alleged corrupt allocation and management of land and abusing the disposal of public assets. It is even worse that the recent allegation involves a man of cloth Prophet Uebert Angel”.

He added, “As residents, we wonder what the prophet can offer to a struggling municipality like Chitungwiza other than swindling it off its diminishing land. Recently we saw him in an alleged scandal, the Gold Mafia. He was exposed by Aljazeera investigative journalists for being at the centre of a money laundering racket while he claimed that he was preaching.”

The residents urged the council not to pursue these self-serving corrupt deals that are meant to benefit a few connected elites hiding behind religious robes at the expense of the residents.
