The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning that the country will this week experience thunderstorms associated with localised heavy rains, strong winds, lightning, hailstorms, fallen trees, damaged roofs and loose debris.

The regions said to be first hit by the rumbling thunderstorms are Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Masvingo and Manicaland.

During this period, the public is urged to stay indoors where possible and avoid the use of electrical appliances during a storm, as well as wifi-routers which are vulnerable to lightning strikes. MSD has also warned the public to fix any leakages and install surge protectors and lightning conductors if possible.

Moreso, farmers are advised to take protective measures for both plants and livestock, if possible, plants should be covered to protect them from the likelihood of hailstorms.

“A cloud band from the Atlantic Ocean is slowly approaching the country through Botswana and is expected to encroach the western borders of the country by Saturday evening 28 and sweep across the country from Sunday 29 October till Friday 3 November 2023. This will result in scattered thunderstorms across the country. Inherent in these thunderstorms will be lightning, localised heavy rains (30mm), strong winds and hailstorms,” said MSD in a statement.
