The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has disbursed more than ZW$257 billion towards the rehabilitation of the country’s road network which is in a sorry state.
Zinara, working together with rural and urban local authorities, has come up with funds that are meant to change the state of the country’s road network.
The disbursements, which were done last week have raised questions with Bulawayo’s newly elected Mayor David Coltart being on record questioning the distribution criteria.
“We want to try to find out from ZINARA how much money they receive. They contribute $125 000 USD which is just a drop in ratio we need 13 million USD to maintain our roads and services. We need much transparency from ZINARA on how much they receive,” wrote Coltart.
Harare City Council head of corporate communications Stanley Gama confirmed they had since received over ZW$8,1 billion from Zinara.
“We have since received our allocation from Zinara. The initial budget of ZW$2,2 billion was exhausted by August and we had a supplementary budget of $13,6 billion out of this we utilized $7,5 billion on routine and programmed maintenance work,” said Chideme.
Zinara head of corporate communications and marketing Mrs Tsungie Munyeza said the disbursements have been useful in restoring order in the country’s roads which improves journey times and reduces delays, and traffic speed while creating employment opportunities.
“The disbursements have been important in delivering various road maintenance projects as well as providing social and economic benefits to the members of the community,” said Munyeza.
