Kwekwe Central Business District buildings are to be decommissioned following uncontrolled underground mining activities that have been happening for years now.
Midlands Province, with particular mention Kwekwe, has been a hive of activity for artisanal miners that have been practising uncontrolled shaft mining rendering most of the buildings in the city centre death traps.
Midlands Minister of State and Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube said this when addressing heads of departments at a meeting held at his office last week. He said department heads should get new premises before the rainy season.
“Reports received are that the buildings have been decommissioned and we have to vacate with immediate effect. Go and find alternative accommodation before the onset of the rains,” Ncube told heads of departments.
The affected departments are the District Development Coordinator (DDC), District Registrar, Civil Courts, District Development Fund (DDF), Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and CMED.
