The Harare City Council will next month embark on a massive drainage cleaning exercise to improve the city’s Central Business District (CBD) drainage system.
The country received its first rains last week and these worked as a reminder of the need to repair and clean drainage blockages in the Central Business District.
With just a few days of rainfall, the streets of Harare got flooded with water due to blocked drainage pipes which no longer function as required. The pipes are old and blocked and can no longer allow water to pass through resulting in street flooding.
Speaking to TechnoMagTV, Harare City of Spokesperson Stanley Gama said the rains received last week reminded them of the need to quickly work on the blocked drainage systems.
“There is a programme already at hand within the Department of Works which is set to improve the drainage system in the Harare CBD area, repairing old rotten pipes and cleaning blockages such that in November it is anticipated that the rains will come in full and we would have prepared for it”.
