City of Harare is going to enforce anti-litter by laws, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has said.
Speaking at the official launch of Chenesa Harare, Tuesday Mafume said there are going to introduce stiff penalty for littering the City.
“There will be also enforcement of anti-litter by laws by the Municipal Police and the fining of shops without requisite number of bins. What we are going to do is that we do have municipal by laws that deal with the issues of littering just like other countries that fines people that litter the city.
“We do understand that at times when we take drastic measures people complain but however, we cannot continue with the behaviour we have seen where people burn maize cobs in the city throw litter everywhere and expect someone else to come and pick it up.
“People throw litter outside moving cars and deposit litter everywhere, we will be taking a very tough stance against such and we want to be clear on this one so that we don’t have dissonance with the public we will not have people clogging our WhatsApp groups and social media handle once the fines and the Metro Police start arresting people on this issue,” he said.
Mafume added that Council will try hard to make sure that all perpetrators are punished.
“We shall be endeavouring capacitate Metropolitan Police so that they are able to follow people who litter day and night.”
