The Ministry of Health and Child Care has said that it is on high alert for reports of Cholera cases as the ministry steps up efforts to prevent the spread of disease in Zimbabwe.
The country has been on high alert following the confirmation of two Cholera cases in Chegutu.
The director for epidemiology and disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Rudo Chikodzere , said that the country’s ports of entry had been identified as possible high risk zones and urged the nation to report any suspected cases to their nearest health care facilities.
“Due to the high human traffic across our borders, there is a high risk of importation of cases into the country, especially considering that Zimbabwe is a transit route for most SADC countries,” Chikodzore said.
“The public is therefore advised to be on the alert for symptoms of watery diarrhea among travelers from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, and alert their nearest health facilities for treatment,” she added.
Zimbabwe recorded its worst cholera epidemic in 2008,which resulted in 98,585 reported cases and caused more than 4,000 deaths.
The Southern African region is battling another Cholera outrbeak with Malawi currently battling its worst Cholera outbreak.
Cases reported since the outbreak in Malawi have risen to over 42 000, according to the countrystatement, while the death toll stands at 1 400, the highest on record in the country.
