Universal Electricity Access By 2030: ZETDC

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) says the nation will get universal access to electricity by 2030.

Speaking at the recently held stakeholders meeting in Bulawayo, ZETDC Acting Managing Director Engineer Howard Choga said only 52.29% have access to electricity and the utility is working towards universal access by 2030.

“Access- Increase electrification and access to electricity from the current 52,29% to at least 72% by 2025 and Universal access by 2030. To this end the company has forged strategic partnership with the Rwanda Energy Group (REG). This is amongst many other projects that the utility is working on to resolve electricity access challenges,” he said.

He also spoke on the steps the utility is taking to ensure there is ease in the current power cuts.

“The nearing completion of the Hwange 7 and 8 is expected to give an addition of 600MW to the grid, expansion of the Kariba South expected to increase reliability of supply,”he added.

The commissioning of Unit 7 set to produce 300MW is expected soon after all tests of equipment and synchronization of the whole system has been done. Meanwhile, Unit 8 which will also generate 300MW is expected to come on line by June.
