The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference has implored Zimbabweans to vote for a competent leader when the country goes to polls this year.

Writing in their Lenten Pastoral Letter for 2023 titled ‘Breaking the Unjust Fetters’,the Bishops said the time now was ripe for a new leader who is able to solve the economic woes that the country has been facing for the last two decades.

“We go to this important General Election to elect a leader that has a clear plan about how to put families first by creating good employment so as to lower the increased number of our poor people living in desperate situations of outright deprivation.

“This election must bring to the highest office a leader who cares about the health of the excluded poor both young and old.”the Bishops said.

Zimbabwe is gearing up for the much anticipated 2023 General Elections at a yet to be announced date and many Zimbabweans are pinning their hopes on this key election to usher in a new era.

Zimbabwe, once touted as the jewel of Africa has endured economic woes for over two decades. The country has been marred by corruption which has been to blame for  bringing the economy down to it’s knees.

The Bishops also lamented the alarming levels of corruption in the country which the leaders have deliberately turned a blind eye to and instead chose to protect those who abused public office for their own benefits.

“What is most worrisome is that such rampant corruption by known players is not being nipped in the bud by the responsible offices, but is seemingly supported by those in power by their silence and inaction,”the Bishops added.

Zimbabwe is currentling battling the worst economic crisis ,which has seen a massive brain drain with millions of Zimbabweans leaving the country in search of greener pastures.
