Zesa Holdings signed a Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) which allows provision of training services for ZESA teams who will be carrying out Total Electrification projects and Rural Datafication projects.
The agreement was signed on Thursday in Bulawayo.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings, Head of Corporate Services Florence Chibasa said the power utility has faced skills flight as many employees left for other job opportunities and this has created a gap in the workforce.
Therefore the agreement will give the remaining ZESA employees an opportunity to be fully trained before they are deployed for Programs such as Rural Datafication and Total Electrification throughout the country.
“65% of our employees are mainly technical staff, the engineers, technicians and operators, we have experienced a lot of skills flight in the past years and we’ve not been able to fill up these gaps and we are trying to reskill those who have remained behind. We are also trying to attract back those who left, so those who were left behind really need to be skilled and we thought this partnership with NUST will take us very far,”
“So we are looking at a number of areas which include Rural Datafication which will see people in the rural areas getting connected to the global village, and with Total electrification we are saying whoever is out there must also have access to electricity and we really need a lot of people to be trained so that they are able to go out there and install solar systems without any challenges,”
“As mentioned we started as a small thing but we are really looking at the whole nation and in the end we would like like everyone to have access to electricity and access to internet and we are very positive that with NUST we will be able to achieve it,” she said.
NUST also expressed their eagerness toward the partnership saying “they have a greater task ahead” working with the utility and “we thank them for the effort they are making and the effort they are going to make going forward because this is a signing ceremony and there is much work to be done later,” the university said.
