The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP), an NGO that monitors human-rights violations, has predicted another disputed election when the country goes to polls later this year.
The organisation said that the continued persecution of the country’s main opposition party, the Citizens Coaltion For Change led by Advocate Chamisa and it’s supporters casted doubt on the possibility of a credible election.
“Zanu PF activists are systematically closing space for political pluralism, making it difficult for opposition supporters to attend and conduct their meetings. Citizens, mostly from rural communities, are being barred and banned from attending opposition meetings and, in most cases, forced or coerced to attend ruling party meetings.
As the elections draw near, there is a rise of infringements on citizens’ rights,”ZPP said in their lates monitoring report.
Zimbabwe heads for general elections later this year in which President Emmerson Mnangagwa will face the youthful Nelson Chamisa in the battle for the highest office.
However ,the lead up to the plebiscite has been characterised by political violence targeting the oppositon supporters making the playing fields not level for all parties taking part.
The government has used the state apparatus to ban Citizens Coalition for Change rallies and meetings without reason.
However the government continued to deny the banning of opposition rallies
