Zimbabwe represented by Maranatha Christian High School won a global contest dubbed the Ralph De La Vega Global Entrepreneurship Competition with their educational app Study Buddie.
Study Buddie provides a platform where teachers and students can interact and share learning resources.
The team won a cash prize of US$15,000, as well as an entrepreneurship course from the institution of their choice.
Maranatha becomes the first school from Africa to win the competition sponsored by Junior Achievement (JA) Global, an organization with a mission to economically empower Zimbabwe’s youth by bridging the gap between classroom education and the world of work.
Made up of four upper six students, In’utu Mubiana (18) and Kudzai Katambarare (18), Tinovonga Sangonda (18) and Blessing Bvunzawabaya (19), the students already have a software development company Hekima Inc. which focuses on making education accessible to all through the use of information communication technologies.
The 2023 competition included teams from Greece (JA Europe), Ohio (Junior Achievement USA), UAE (INJAZ Al-Arab), Mexico (JA Americas), Guam (JA Asia Pacific), and Zimbabwe (JA Africa).
The Ralph De La Vega Global Entrepreneurship Competition recognises outstanding young entrepreneurs and seeks to equip senior secondary school students with entrepreneurial skills and mindset to solve problems in their communities by launching a business ventures.
Maranatha Christian High (through Hekima Inc.) won the JA Africa Company of the year Competitions held Nigeria in last year, and it is through this win the team got an opportunity to represent the African region at the just ended Ralph de la Vega Global Entrepreneurship Competition.
