A survey that was conducted for the Brenthurst Foundation by independent London-based research group SABI Strategy in January, using an in-depth, 15-minute questionnaire has predicted an outright win for Citizens Coalition for Change leade Nelson Chamisa in the 2023 Harmonised Elections.
According to the survey, Advocate Nelson Chamisa will win the much anticipated plebiscite with a 53 % majority while ZANU PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa will get 40 % of the votes.
“Responding to the question “Thinking ahead to the next general election, which party will you cast your vote for?” 52% said they would vote for the CCC while only 40% said Zanu-PF,”the foundation said
The foundation said that the key findings from the survey indicated that the Zimbabwean nation wanted change of governance as things had gotten worse in the post Mugabe era.
The Brenthurst Foundation added that the majority of the people who responded to the survey expressed fears that the elections will not be free and fair
“But 47% of voters believe the 2023 election will not be free and fair compared to just 38% who say it will be free and fair just like the previous plebiscites.
“Cheating in the counting process was cited as the biggest threat to a free and fair election (41%) with ‘the government abusing its power’ cited by 29% and ‘security force violence’ cited by 21%,” the survey found.
Zimbabwe is heading for the critical General Elections later this year and fears of another disputed election have emerged. The oppositon parties, notably the CCC has been under siege .
Last month, suspected ZANU PF supporters unleashed a brutal beating on opposition supporters from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC),who had gathered for an internal meeting in Murehwa.
In the same month ,26 CCC activists were arrested for holding an internal meeting without police clearance in alledged violation of the Maintainance of Peace Act (MOPA).The activists wer later granted bail but their incarcerations was condemned by the civil society as an attempt by the government to intimidate the opposition using state institutions.
Interestingly, internal meetings are not prohibited by MOPA and a police clearance is not needed to sanction such a gathering.
