Ethio Telecom previously known as the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation, together with Huawei launched an innovation programme that will benefit about 250 Tech start-ups.
Speaking during the official launch of the innovation program Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru said the program is an excellent chance for start-ups and also a chance to accelerate the country’s wish of realising digital Ethiopia.
“This is a golden opportunity for start-ups and to accelerate the country’s aspiration of realising digital Ethiopia.The program will have paramount national significance in empowering and supporting solution oriented technologies.”
Tamru added that, network coverage, digital literacy, device availability and affordability, relevant local contents, usage affordability and consumer readiness are among the key enablers.
She went on to say the innovation program will contribute a lot to national economy and job creation.
Huawei Deputy CEO, Michael Liu also said the innovation program will give a chance to all companies to embrace new technologies.
Liu went on to say Ethiopian users will enjoy digital infrastructure to accelerate digital economy and added that the program will support the digital transformation of Ethiopia while boosting digital eco-environment.
He further noted that digital economy is a long journey which requires rich ecosystem environment.
The program will have three phases; focusing on 100 start-ups that leverage cloud and financial service capability, expanding to 150 start-ups working on digital content and solutions, and establishing Ethio telecom TechHub research and development centre.
Selected winners and start-ups will obtain professional expertise, financial support and material support and will be sponsored to gain international experience.
