Nigeria has become the first African country to see the commercial launch of Starlink, the satellite based internet service from SpaceX.
SpaceX tweeted the news on Monday, announcing that the Starlink connection to Nigeria was up and running.
Nigeria has now become the first country on the continent to use Starlink’s satellite Internet and the 46th country globally. The announcement means that Nigerians will have access to Internet speeds of about 50-200 Mbit/s in most areas.
The deployment of Starlink’s Internet services in Nigeria means that the company will be competing with local Internet service providers with lower-priced offerings.
To access the services, Nigerians will pay one-time hardware costs of (US$595), with a monthly service fee that allows multiple device connections as well as uncapped data at (US$42).
Starlink has Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites which are designed to offer high speed, low latency broadband internet in remote and rural locations across the globe.
