The Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) has revealed that it has so far acquired 13 electric cars from a Chinese firm as the country embraces green technology.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona hailed the acquisiton of the electric cars which he said was in line with global trends of switching to electric cars to reduce gas emissions.
”Battery electric vehicles are a clean source of energy as compared to fossil powered vehicles. EasyGo’s fleet of battery electric vehicles has increased to 13 and these are used as taxis and airport shuttle vehicle,’’ Minister Mhona.
Electric vehicles typically have a smaller carbon footprint than gasoline cars, even when accounting for the electricity used for charging as well as cheaper and the Minister Mhona said that the CMED should look into procuring electric buses that will bring relief to urban commuter due to low fares
“Besides protecting the enviromnent ,you are also likely to bring relief to urban commuters as fares are most likely to be lower than the current ones as the cost of running electric vehicles is far cheaper than that of convectional ones,”he added.
Zimbabwe appears ready for the switch to electric vehicles with EV charging network having made available for public use in Zimbabwe.
