The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested four suspects on charges of defrauding state owned mobile network operator NetOne.
The police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the suspects had been apprehended and investigations were currently underway to bring the other suspects who are still at large to justice.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrests of Primrose Maireti (32) James Mwanza (35),Khumbulani Nyapfumbi (30) and Simbarashe Mandimustira,” Ass Comm Nyathi said.
The suspects allegedly stole pinless airtime then sold it at a higher discount than the company’s dealers.
Police detectives teamed up with the Netone Loss Control and Fraud Managment Unit to track down the suspects leading to the arrests of James Mwanza.
Checks confirmed that Mwanza had received ZWL$50 million from the deal leading to him implicating Maireti and others.
According to investigations,Netone was defrauded of ZWL$565 000 000 worth of airtime between 3 December and 19 january 2023 as some Netone employees also shared the loot.]
Meanwhile the company has since recovered a Honda fit vehicle from Khumbulani Nyapfumbi and a residential which was bought using proceeds from the loot.
The other vehicle recovered is currently being shipped to Zimbabwe from Japan valued at USD3 971.
