Qualcomm has partnered with Iridium Communications Inc (IRDM.O) to provide a satellite-based messaging service on premium smartphones running Google’s Android operating system,
The Snapdragon Stellite, satellite service similar to the one rolled out by Apple last year , enables devices installed with the X70 modem from the company to communicate with satellites to transmit messages when there is no mobile signal.
Snapdragon Satellite will initially only be available for usage in emergencies, enabling users to call for assistance even if they are in a distant location lacking a cell connection.
There will be response administrators for the SOS messages sent by users, administrators use the satellite to instantly see the user’s Latitude and Longitude in their customized mapping and coordination software to decide which authority would manage the rescue.
Snapdragon Satellite will provide global connectivity using mobile messaging from around the world1, starting with devices based on the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform.
Emergency messaging on Snapdragon Satellite is planned to be available on next-generation smartphones, launched in select regions starting in the second half of 2023
