Zimbabwe is set to produce 3000 tonnes of lithium per day after commissioning the Sabi Star Lithium Mine in Buhera North today, Technomag reports.
The plant will produce approximately 800 to 1000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate a raw material used in the production of lithium-ion batteries used for powering consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
Lithium-Ion, or Li-Ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that’s used in many applications, but most commonly in the electronics industry. Li-Ion batteries provide portable electricity, powering electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets.
Li-Ion batteries are also used to supply energy to medical equipment, electric vehicles and power tools.
Aside from the electronics industry, lithium is a staple mineral in mining, manufacturing, energy storage and many others. Due to its many industry uses, the importance of Lithium-Ion batteries cannot be overstated: it is, quite possible, one of the most crucial developments in the modern world.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially commissioned the plant and expressed his appreciation to Max Mind Pvt Ltd, the company spearheading the project.
“It is pleasing that Max Mind Pvt Ltd plans to set up a unique battery-grade Lithium plant in Mapinga. This mining project will therefore directly feed into the Mines to Energy Park in Mapinga, which will House a Lithium processing plant marking the inception of a Lithium-ion Battery value chain in Zimbabwe.” he said
