Teachers Decry Poor Renumeration

0

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has decried the poor renumeration of teachers by the government.

Writing on his Twitter,Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said that the paltry salaries being earned by teachers are not enough to sustain theirs children’s education.

“Grade 7 results are in; common sense is outside the window. Boarding schools are on average charging US$1 200 for a Form 1 place, including uniforms.

A teacher will need six months to get their Form 1 child into a boarding school. Shocking levels of pauperism in the civil service,”he said.

Teachers in Zimbabwe are earning US$100 at the prevailing rate,an amount which is not enough to sustain their livelihoods.

The teachers earlier this year called on the government to prioritize their plight and also ensure that their salaries are restored to the USD $540 which they were earning before November 2017.

Meanwhile government has maintained that it is incapacitated to pay salaries in forex as the central bank does not have enough forex to cater for that.

The education sector in Zimbabwe has been hit by industrial actions as teachers forced the government to the negotiating table.
