Cyclone Idai Victims Return To Disaster Prone Area

The Chimanimani Rural Development Council has called for the destruction of structures that are being on land that was destroyed by Cyclone Idai four years ago.

The development comes amid reports that many families are deserting the houses which were allocated to them by the government when they were removed from the disaster zone.

Chimanimani District Development Coordinator Joseph Manyurapasi called on the government to act on the situation.

“It’s disturbing that people are reconstructing shelters on the waterways where their houses were destroyed by Cyclone Idai. Council must establish what these people are saying. Council is supposed to effect development control. The local authority must give them order that they should go back to Runyararo.

The structures that they are rebuilding must be razed down,” said Manyurapasi.

Chimanimani was hit by the Cyclone Idai which left a trail of destruction in the area with hundreds being displaced from their homes.

Areas such as Kopa and Ngangu saw houses some people being buried under a pile of rubble as Idai wreaked havoc in the Eastern Highlands .

The government had relocated and allocated houses for the families at Runyararo Farm in Vumba.

However the families returned to the land citing loss of income as the land at the farm was not enough to sustain them.
