The Minister of the of Energy and Power Development Soda Zhemu has told journalists that his ministry was currently working on a plan to ensure that the country does not endure long hours of loadshedding.

Speaking during a press briefing,Minister Zhemu said that  negotiations to secure power imports have  started with other countries and the government was now  waiting for the finalisation of the deal.

“We will be adding our power imports in order to reduce the gap left by Kariba. There are negotiations going on between Mozambique and Zambia to import electricity” Hon Minister Soda.

Zimbabwe is currently reeling from power cuts which has seen the power utility rolling out loadshedding across the country.

The loadshedding was necessitated by suspension of  power generation at Kariba Dam due to water levels which  were too low to continue power-generation activities.

However Minister Zhemu disclosed that Zimbabwe has been allowed to continue generation of power at Kariba but is now restricted to 300 Megawatts.

“There have been some negotiations and Zimbabwe has been allowed to continue generating electricity from Kariba.” Hon Minister Soda.

The country had pinned its hopes on the construction of the  Unit 7 and 8 Unit Hwange at  Thermal Power Station that will add an additional 600MW generating capacity to the country’s national grid.

Minister Zhemu revealed that 300 MW will be added by the Hwange unit 7 which will be  commissioned before the end of this month while Unit 8 will be coming online in the first quarter of 2023.
