Dethroned Ntabazinduna Chief Nhlanhlayamangwe Felix Ndiweni has advised Zimbabwean Teachers to stand their grounds in demanding a starting basic salary in United States Dollars.
This statement came in support of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) statement, where they were advocating the government to follow international statutes in budget planning of educational funding.
“Experts have recommended that Zimbabwe follows international statutes and treaties in budget planning such that education funding becomes sustainable,” said ARTUZ.
In response to the statement Ndiweni highlighted that government must consider USD 540 as starting salary.
“We support the teachers for a basic starting salary of USD540 and paid in USD. We encourage the teachers to stand their ground. For the sake of our children and their children’s children.
Last month teachers also highlighted that they are incapacitated after a 25 % increase to the cost of living adjustment to all civil servants, pledging to address their welfare.
“The workers have power to collectively withdraw their labour on 26 September without much encouragement from the leaders. Our stomachs should encourage us to stay at home.
“If we manage to pull this one off, the employer will definitely pay our US$540,” said Obert Masaraure.
Earlier this month Senators highlighted that teachers’ children are being chased from school due to failure to pay school fees yet government in February 2022 pledged to release $2,68 billion towards payment of school fees for children of teachers with a maximum of 3 children per teacher getting $20 000 each per term but the fees is still yet to be paid.
However, Government has refused to budge on the US dollar demand, saying it does not have the capacity to pay salaries in foreign currency since its revenues are largely in Zim-dollars.
