Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) President Nelson Chamisa has launched Pre-Election Pact on Electoral Reforms (PREPARE) a blueprint outlining seven electoral reforms pillars as solution to disputed elections in the country.
Speaking at Press Conference in Harare, Chamisa said Zimbabwe cannot afford another disputed election.
“The launch of PREPARE will sufficiently prepare our great country Zimbabwe for the next level in levelling the playing field of our elections, and also creating a platform for political democracy of our country and making sure that we do not have disputed elections.
“Let me emphasise the fact that this document we are launching today is our humble submission to the ongoing discourse, on what needs to be corrected, to conduce the environment for elections in our country,” he said.
The demands made include, the right to vote, credibility of the voters’ roll, a real time and credible results management system, integrity of election processes, political freedoms and media access, security of the vote and security of the voter.
Chamisa highlighted that every citizen aged 18 must be given the right to vote and all disfranchised citizens which include the Diaspora, Prisoners, People with Disabilities.
He added that the voters roll must be timeously accessible and independently audited to enhance transparency, scrutiny and effective planning on part of political stakeholders.
“There is need for sufficient Electoral Law provision to regulate the consistent conduct of all Result Management process of counting, collation, transmission, and announcement.
“The appointment of ZEC personnel must be based on merit and competence and they must exercise their duties objectively and impartially.
“Citizens must be guaranteed their political rights and freedom whilst Public media coverage for elections activities should ensure equality, diversity and plurality.
“The constitution, the Electoral Act and relevant state institutions should ensure the protection and security of the vote and must be able to handle election disputes.
“Fundamental rights, freedoms and security of the voter must be guaranteed at all stages of the electoral cycles.”
