Mahere Congratulates Mpofu For Setting Zimbabwe’s New Marathon Record@World Championship

The Spokesperson for Zimbabwe’s arguably largest opposition party Advocate Fadzai Mahere has sent in hearty congratulations to Zimbabwe’s Isaac Mpofu for setting a new Zimbabwean marathon record finishing 10th in the Men’s Marathon at the World Athletics Championships in the USA. Mpofu, who ran 2 hours 7 mins 57 sec smashed the Zimbabwe national record which was held by Cuthbert Nyasango at 2 hours 9 mins 52 seconds.

In a facebook post Mahere said, “Huge congratulations to Isaac Mpofu who broke the Zimbabwe national record for the Men’s Marathon & finished 10th at the World Championships. He finished in a time of 2 hours 7 mins 57 secs to break Cuthbert Nyasango’s record. Well done, champ! #TeamZimbabwe!”

The lion hearted Isaac Mpofu did the unthinkable at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States, yesterday July 17th, 2022.

The 33 year old Isaac Mpofu set the new Zimbabwe marathon record with an impressive 10th at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Mpofu impressively took out nearly 2 minutes from the old Zimbabwean marathon record.

Mpofu’s time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 57 seconds shaved nearly two minutes from the previous record held by Cuthbert Nyasango, who set a time of 2 hours 9 minutes and 52 seconds.

The first and second place runners in the marathon both hail from Ethiopia. Tamirat Tola ran a championships record of 2:05:36 and Mosinet Geremew had a second-place time of 2:06:44. Belgium’s Bashir Abdi ran a third-place time of 2:06:48.

Mpofu, represented Zimbabwe in the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, coming 52nd.

In May, Mpofu won the 42.2km Durban Marathon but was disqualified and forced to forfeit the R50,000 winning cheque for failing to display his licence number at the back of his shirt, although he had one in front.
